Bear
by Barbara
A purebred standard poodle, Barrett (Bear) was born in 2003 in Toronto, and he joined our family here in Ottawa when he was six-month’s old. From the moment he came and sat on my lap at the breeder’s, I knew Bear was meant to be a part of our lives.
Bear is a smart, gentle, sweet soul who loves to be constantly surrounded by people. When our children are playing in their rooms, Bear still goes in with one of his toys and sits beside them as they play, always careful not to step on any of their things that may lay strewn across the floor. He is also sporty and playful: Bear loves to play soccer with his girls, run alongside my bike, and take long walks through the wilderness with his pack of four-legged friends. He is treated as a family member not just by his immediate family, but by all who know him. He is the best friend to many a dog, adult, and child.
As a favourite of grandparents, and because of his calm demeanor, desire for affection, obedience, handsome looks (Ooo, that hair!), and his attention to whoever is speaking, I knew Bear would be an excellent dog for therapy work. And he loves to be a ‘go’ dog! He is the kind of guy who everyone wants to take home and make their own!
Since Bear passed his Ottawa Therapy Dogs assessment, we spend our ‘work’ time visiting with seniors. He now automatically stops when he sees senior citizens on the street and sits, assuming they want to pat him. Bear loves his job and takes his work home with him!
I really feel blessed to have this dog — this wonderful, beautiful, incredible dog — as a part of my life. And I am delighted to share him with all.
